The goal of this class is to teach our baby puppies basic socialization and the essential skills a puppy should learn so they are easy to live with.  Socialization will encompass exploring new sights, smells, and sounds to build their confidence in a safe environment. Off leash play with other puppies is available providing suitable play styles are in the class. Play time with other puppies is not mandatory and pet parents have the option to opt out of puppy play at any time.

Puppy care: we guide you through feeding, house training, grooming, and (those dreaded nail trims!) as well as debunk some common puppy myths.

This class will focus on those essential cues we want our puppies to know in the early stages of life; sit, focus on us, and recall are a few of our favorites.

This class is for puppies 2 months up to 4 months old. Must have their first set of vaccinations (DH2PP). If you register early, ensure your puppy is not over the age limit by the class start date.

Reminder: To guarantee your spot in class, payment must be received within 48 hours of booking or the reservation is removed from the system. Payment can be made in person, by phone with credit card only, or by e-transfer to hello@canineaddiction.ca (must include GST).

This class will focus on core cues and manners such as stay, leave it, and place. These cues are geared towards teaching your puppy patience and are important for your puppies safety.

Socialization with other puppies, people, and objects will be covered in each class. Socialization with other puppies is not mandatory and pet parents have the option to opt out of puppy play at any time.

This class is for puppies 5 months up to 7 months old. Must have their second set of vaccinations (DH2PP and rabies). If you register early, ensure your puppy is not over the age limit by the class start date.

There is no prerequisite for this class, however, we recommend your puppy knows recall, sit, and down.
Reminder: To guarantee your spot in class, payment must be received within 48 hours of booking or the reservation is removed from the system. Payment can be made in person, by phone with credit card only, or by e-transfer to hello@canineaddiction.ca (must include GST).

This class will focus on proofing the core cues learned in previous classes with more focus on leash walking and manners such as how to politely meet a stranger.

Less class time is dedicated to puppy socialization as we ask for more focus from our adolescent puppies. Puppy play is not mandatory and pet parents have the option to opt out of puppy play at any time.

This class is for puppies 8 months old up to 11 months old. Must have their second set of vaccinations (DH2PP and rabies). If you register early, ensure your puppy is not over the age limit by the class start date.

Common Puppy Myths:

There is a misconception in parts of the veterinary, breeder, and pet professional industries that it is not safe to let puppies outside or even play with other puppies until they are fully vaccinated for risk of disease transmission. Unless a puppy will be exposed to wilderness areas, attend dog parks, or interact in areas where the health status of dogs is unknown, the health risk of a puppy contacting a disease in an urban environment after they have received their first set of age appropriate vaccines is very low.
The position statement from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior states,”it should be standard care for puppies to receive socialization before they are fully vaccinated. Incomplete or improper socialization during this important time can increase the risk of behavioral problems later in life including fear, avoidance, and/or aggression. They need to be exposed to the world. Albeit, slowly, controlled and positive, but it cannot wait” (AVSAB, 2021).
Safely socialize a puppy in a low volume puppy class where all puppies have a known health status.

Okay, mostly false.

As they mature, some puppies outgrow certain issues however, this is not something to rely on! Puppies are creatures of habit and “puppy issues” that are allowed to persist through adolescence often become even worse behaviours as adults, because of course they’re bigger now. So that puppy who is allowed to mouth, can grow up into a mouthy adult dog. And the cute puppy that is allowed to jump up on people, learns it’s still ok to jump on guests as a larger, heavier adult dog. It’s important to work with your puppy from a young age to ensure puppy issues do not become adult habits.

Puppies start learning the moment they are born and training should start as soon as they come home. Puppies can start learning basic cues, house training, and tricks at 8 weeks old. Waiting to train your puppy can lead to many unwanted adult behaviours such as fear and anxiety from the lack of exposure and understanding of what we humans want from them.

Resumes Fall 2024

Does your dog bark and lunge at people, dogs, cars, or a specific trigger while on leash but never shows this behaviour off leash? Then you likely have a leash reactive dog.

Leash reactivity is one of the most common dog behavior problems we see and is typically a frustration or fear response. Although your dog’s reactivity can draw a lot of potentially unwanted attention on walks, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

This class is designed to address the underlying cause of your dogs reactivity and slowly with repetition, change your dog’s association to their trigger. We do this in two ways: first by managing their arousal they are able to stay focused on the handler and second, we play the engage/disengage game where they are rewarded for noticing a trigger and not reacting.

Important: The first class is a mandatory information session for the handlers only, please do not bring your dog to the first week. If a handler misses the first class, the dog and handler may be removed from class without a refund.

Notice: A dog that has previously punctured another human or dog must: complete a private assessment before registering and wear a basket muzzle unless instructed otherwise.

This class is for dogs 8 months and older at the time of registration.  Limited to 4 participants. Dogs must be vaccinated (DH2PP and rabies) to attend class.

Reminder: To guarantee your spot in class, payment must be received within 48 hours of booking or the reservation is removed from the system. Payment can be made in person, by phone with credit card only, or by e-transfer to hello@canineaddiction.ca (must include GST).

This class introduces exercises designed to teach our dogs how to settle and calm down through interactive games.

Each week we build on the games from previous weeks to get our dogs more comfortable relaxing. We also cover how to set up our dogs work/rest schedule, activity level, answer. popular questions about calming products available on the market.
